What is your heart’s desire?
Ano ang iyong pagha-hangad? Interestingly, the Filipino word ‘hangad’ captures both the activity of mind and heart; an activity of one’s total being.
It’s been 26 years since Hangad Music Ministry first expressed their heart’s desire and endures. Since then, the group continued to serve people through liturgical songs and worship. Who would have thought that a humble beginning as a simple choir inside Ateneo de Manila University would be a well known music group that will invade the liturgical music agenda of the Church.
It all started with a spark. The yearning to offer service for a particular community; and now extends to the universal Church. The Hangad, is composed of group of friends, professionals: people who have passion for music and service.
“Since our formation in 1991, we in Hangad have spread our deeply personal brand of inspirational and liturgical music through seven albums and four music videos produced by the Jesuit Communications Foundation; as well as Masses, weddings, full-length concerts, concert guestings, parish choir workshops, and other events, both around the Philippines in the United States.” (www.hangad.org/about-us)
The Hangad Music Ministry’s existence is a genuine proof of the Church’s mandate to offer music that has a ‘holy sincerity of form’ (Musicam Sacram, 4). Hence, it is an opportune time for the Philippine Church to reflect on the”Instruction on Music Ministry’ promulgated by the Vatican 50 years ago with Hangad’s grateful expression that will happen this coming October 22, 2017, Sunday. It will start with the celebration of the Mass at 5:00pm to be followed by a free concert at 6:30pm at the Church of the Gesu, Ateneo de Manila University. The said celebration is in line with their 26th founding anniversary wherein they will also launch their limited-edition album called “Hangad 25 The Anniversary Celebration” which contains songs from previous albums plus three new recordings.

The group, without a doubt, embodies the command of the psalmist in the Old Testament crying aloud:
“Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth.Sing to the LORD, bless his name;proclaim his salvation day after day. Tell his glory among the nations;among all peoples, his marvelous deeds.” (Ps. 96)
